Free Online JSON Formatter & Validator — No Signup, No Data Sent

If you work with APIs, config files, or any backend system, you’ve probably spent more time than you’d like squinting at a wall of unformatted JSON. Whether it’s a 500-line API response or a tiny config snippet, readable JSON saves debugging time.

That’s why I built a free JSON Formatter & Validator that runs entirely in your browser.

Why Another JSON Formatter?

Most online JSON tools either plaster your screen with ads, require signups, or — worse — send your data to their servers. If you’re working with production API responses, database exports, or anything remotely sensitive, that’s a problem.

This tool takes a different approach. Everything runs client-side with pure JavaScript. Your JSON never leaves your browser tab. There’s no backend, no analytics on your input, no data collection whatsoever.

What It Does

Format & Beautify — Paste messy, minified JSON and get clean, indented output with proper syntax highlighting. Choose between 2-space and 4-space indentation.

Validate — Instantly tells you if your JSON is valid. When it’s not, you get a clear error message pointing to the exact problem — missing commas, unmatched brackets, trailing commas that sneak into your configs.

Minify — Need to compress JSON for storage or transmission? One click strips all whitespace and newlines.

Copy to Clipboard — Formatted output copies with one click. No selecting, no Ctrl+A mishaps.

Common Use Cases

Working with REST APIs? Paste the raw response and instantly see the structure. Debugging a Kafka message? Format the payload to find that nested field. Editing a package.json or Docker Compose file? Validate before you commit and avoid that embarrassing CI failure.

I use this daily when working with Spring Boot applications — checking request/response payloads, validating application configs, and formatting Elasticsearch query DSLs.

Try It Now

Head over to the JSON Formatter & Validator and give it a shot. Bookmark it — it’s the kind of tool you’ll reach for more often than you expect.

FAQ

Is my data safe? Yes. The tool runs 100% in your browser using client-side JavaScript. No data is sent to any server. You can verify this by opening your browser’s Network tab — zero outbound requests while using the tool.

Does it work offline? Once the page is loaded, the formatting and validation functions work without an internet connection since all logic is in the browser.

What’s the maximum JSON size it can handle? It comfortably handles files up to several megabytes. For extremely large files (50MB+), a desktop tool like jq would be more appropriate.

Can I format JSON with comments? Standard JSON doesn’t support comments. If your file has comments (like JSONC used in VS Code settings), you’ll need to remove them first. The validator will flag comments as syntax errors, which is technically correct per the JSON spec.

Why not just use VS Code? You absolutely can. But when you’re reviewing logs in a terminal, checking a quick API response, or working on a machine where your editor isn’t set up, a browser tool is faster. No context switching needed.
