Free Online Diff Checker — Compare Text & Code Side by Side

Comparing two versions of a file shouldn’t require installing software or pasting your code into someone else’s server. Whether it’s two config files, a before-and-after SQL query, or competing draft versions of a document, you just need to see what changed.

I built a free Diff Checker that does exactly that — in your browser, with zero data leaving your machine.

How It Works

Paste your original text on the left, modified text on the right, and hit Compare. The tool highlights every difference line by line: additions in green, deletions in red, and unchanged lines in their original color for context.

It uses a proper diff algorithm (the same kind that powers git diff) to produce accurate, meaningful comparisons rather than naive character-by-character matching.

Features That Matter

Ignore Whitespace — Trailing spaces and tab-vs-space differences creating noise? Toggle whitespace ignore to focus on meaningful changes only.

Ignore Case — Comparing outputs where capitalization doesn’t matter? Case-insensitive mode strips that noise away.

Swap Sides — Accidentally pasted the original on the wrong side? One click swaps them without losing your content.

Client-Side Only — Like all the tools on this site, nothing leaves your browser. Compare proprietary code, production configs, or sensitive documents without worry.

When You’ll Use This

Code reviews when you don’t have Git set up. Comparing database migration scripts before and after edits. Checking if two API responses are identical. Verifying that a minified config matches the original. Diffing environment-specific config files (dev vs. staging vs. production).

I find myself using this most often when comparing Kubernetes YAML files across environments — it’s faster than firing up a full IDE just to check three lines.

Try It Now

Open the Diff Checker, paste your two texts, and see the differences instantly. Works on any device with a modern browser.

FAQ

Can I compare entire files? Yes, paste the full contents of both files. The tool handles large text blocks well and will highlight every difference across hundreds of lines.

Does it support syntax highlighting for code? The current version highlights differences (additions/deletions) but doesn’t do language-specific syntax highlighting. The diff colors take priority so you can focus on what actually changed.

Is there a character or line limit? No hard limit. It comfortably handles texts with thousands of lines. For very large files, performance depends on your browser, but modern browsers handle it well.

Can I compare binary files like images or PDFs? No, this tool compares plain text only. For binary file comparison, you’ll need a specialized tool like Beyond Compare or a hex diff utility.

How is this different from diff in the terminal? The output is visual and color-coded rather than patch format. If you’re comfortable with terminal diff or git diff, those work great. This tool is for when you want a quick visual comparison without leaving your browser — especially useful when you’re not on your own development machine.
